Reformed churches respond to worldwide economic injustice and ecological destructionDelegates to the 23rd general council (Debrecen, 1997) unanimously called on the member churches of the Alliance to engage in a committed process of recognition, education and confession at all levels of their life with regard to world economic injustice and ecological destruction. Three words in the call to this church process are especially important. EducationThe call challenges Reformed churches to help their members to understand economic processes, their consequences for people's lives, and the growing threats to the environment, and to motivate them to work for constructive change. ConfessionReformed Christians believe in the sovereignty of God over the whole created order. The search for economic justice and ecological integrity is not just an ethical or moral imperative. Global economic injustice and environmental devastation challenge our integrity as followers of Jesus Christ. AllWe cannot leave these questions to the politicians or the "experts". The whole Reformed family needs to learn about them and to address them in practice. Active commitment to justice for the whole creation is a fundamental demand of our Reformed faith. The call is addressed to all Warc member churches at all levels of their life. It is a call to a church process involving the whole family. Warc will do all it can to assist member churches to engage in this process, but the important thing is the engagement itself.
